GIS Map Viewer Overview
Purpose This system provides interactive search capabilities and map views of pipeline, survey, and well location data. RRC pipeline and well location data changes daily, and the data found on this site is updated nightly. Due to the dynamic nature of this data, the pipeline and well information found on this site is not necessarily current at all times. Note: The GIS Map Viewer utilizes popup windows. Users should disable popup blocking software while using this viewer. Click here for instructions. Map Display The GIS viewer initially opens to a static state map showing the Railroad Commission Oil and Gas Division district boundaries (thick lines), district numbers, and district office locations (red stars), as well as county boundaries (thin lines), and some major cities.

| Additional map features, such as roads, rivers, surveys, pipelines, LPGAS sites, and wells will display as you zoom in to the map display. The red scale bar at the bottom of the map view shows the current display scale in miles.

Wells
The image below shows an area that contains a large number of wells. This example shows oil wells, plugged oil wells, canceled locations, dry holes, injection/disposal wells, and permitted locations. (See Well Legend.) |
| In general, the well number is displayed to the right of the well symbol. Below the well number are the last 5 digits of the API number. In congested areas, you may need to zoom in closer in order for these numbers to display properly. At this time, not all of the historic API numbers have been identified in the Geographic Information System. The wells may
also appear with a yellow background if well logs are available through the Identify Wells tool. Pipelines The image below shows pipelines (green lines). The types of pipelines in this image are Crude Transmission, Crude Gathering, and Gas Gathering.

Pipelines can be used for Gas Transmission, Crude Transmission, Carbon Dioxide, HVL products, and Non-HVL Liquid Products. See the Glossary for pipeline attribute definitions. Surveys The image below shows survey lines, abstract numbers, and survey names (purple lines and text). In general, the survey name shown is the original grantee described in the General Land Office Abstract of Original Land Titles. (See Survey Name Abbreviations.) |
